Senior Full Stack Java Engineer with sysadmin experience Position Overview We're seeking an experienced Full Stack Java Engineer to join BarNet Openlaw (openlaw.com.au), a leading Australian for purpose, not-for-profit, legal informatics company revolutionising access to legal information in Australia. This role combines technical expertise with team leadership, focusing on building robust, secure, and scalable solutions for legal professionals. Location Remote position within Australia Periodic in-person meetings required in Sydney Flexible working hours with consideration for team collaboration Key Responsibilities Lead the development and architecture of full-stack Java applications, emphasizing security, scalability, and performance Drive the adoption and maintenance of Test-Driven Development practices across the team. Implement and refine AWS-based and Cloudflare-based solutions. Maintain and refine our DevOps and SecOps practices and general orchestration methodologies. Mentor team members and foster a culture of engineering excellence Design and implement Natural Language Processing solutions for legal document analysis Maintain and refine monitoring, logging, and metrics systems. Measure, optimise and refactor application performance and resource utilisation. Collaborate with stakeholders to understand and implement business requirements and provide modular acceleration possibilities to business needs. Required Technical Skills 5+ years of professional demonstrated Java development experience. Real coding experience. Strong proficiency in full-stack development including: Java 11+ and GWT (desirable) Modern front-end frameworks (React/Angular) RESTful API design and implementation Extensive experience with AWS services and cloud architecture Proven track record implementing security best practices and compliance requirements Experience with Test-Driven Development and automated testing frameworks Proficiency in implementing and maintaining logging, monitoring, and alerting solutions Demonstrated experience with Natural Language Processing technologies Strong understanding of performance optimisation techniques Leadership Skills Experience building and mentoring technical teams Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders Proven ability to drive technical initiatives and best practices Track record of successful project delivery in an Agile environment Required Experience Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience 5+ years of professional software development experience Demonstrated experience in legal tech or similar document-heavy industries preferred History of implementing secure, scalable applications Experience with continuous integration and deployment practices Some awareness of the importance of typography and UX design and the ability to translate that design.
