Job location: Thomas Embling Hospital, located in Fairfield just 15 minutes north of the Melbourne city centre. Due to our announced expansion, we have a need for experienced like-minded professionals to join our team. Thomas Embling Hospital is a secure Mental Health, currently 134 bed, hospital providing acute care, rehabilitation, and continuing care programs. With planned expansion commencing 2024 with significant increase in access to care, we will have a dedicated Women’s service and an additional medium secure men’s facility. About the Role: The Senior Mental Health Nurse has a pivotal leadership role in supporting the Director of Nursing in nursing workforce development, professional development, promotion and review of nursing practice at Forensicare. The Senior Mental Health Nurse (SMHN) provides expert advice regarding workforce learning and development and contributes directly to the provision of training and support activities. The SMHN is responsible for the day-to-day operations and management, and leadership for staff of the Nursing Practice Development Unit (NPDU). The NPDU has responsibility for the coordination, evaluation and ongoing development of the early career nursing graduate program, the transition to practice program and enrolled nurse entry program, provision of quality undergraduate nursing placements and other nursing programs, including Forensic Education for Nurses. The NPDU promotes evidenced based practices and development within the nursing workforce and supports translational research. Duties: Nursing Practice Development Unit: Oversee the work of the Nursing Practice Development Unit (NPDU). Promote a learning culture within Forensicare by ensuring the NPDU has a presence in local areas and services and supports. Ensure NPDU programs support the learning requirements for compliance with relevant quality and practice standards and take the initiative to pursue opportunities for quality improvement, and actively contribute to accreditation. Ensure the NPDU projects are evidence based and relate to Forensicare’s strategic plan and promote best practice. Nursing Workforce and Practice Development, Research and Evidence-Based Practice: Promote a Service culture that reinforces high standards of therapeutic practice and provides leadership to develop strategies to improve service and patient outcomes. Implement and manage nurse training needs assessment and analyses to identify training and education requirements for Forensicare nurses. Ensure learning and development opportunities are relevant, available and evidence-based for staff at all levels including further development of e-learning approaches. Provision of advice and progress reports on the staff development activities to Director of Nursing at Forensicare. About You: Demonstrated leadership skills and experience in the management and delivery of mental health services. Proven experience with planning, coordinating, facilitating and evaluating staff development programs. Demonstrated capacity in identifying and initiating service objectives. Able to demonstrate developed knowledge and understanding of contemporary evidence-based treatments and/or best practices within a clinical, social and political healthcare environment that drives quality nursing practice. Expert knowledge and skills in psychiatric nursing and forensic psychiatric nursing. What you need: Postgraduate Diploma in Mental Health Nursing or equivalent. Registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulations Agency (AHPRA). Minimum of 6 years clinical experience.
