Senior Scientist In-Charge of Microbiology Pay: Competitive Location: Melbourne/Victoria Employment type: Full-Time Job Description Req#: DDHAA Alfred Health is a leader in health care delivery, improvement, research, and education. Grade 3 Scientist position Fixed term (until 31/10/2025) Full Time (80 hours per fortnight) About the organisation: Alfred Health and Monash Health have established a partnership to deliver a Shared Pathology Service (SPS). This partnership is aligned with the Victorian Government’s wider Pathology system reform to create new public pathology networks. We are working in partnership to ensure we meet future demands and continue to provide high-quality pathology services for our patients and the community across both health services. The SPS is currently planning to expand services to Western Health (WH) by late 2025. In addition, following the recommendation to form local health service networks by the Department of Health, Alfred Health will be merging with Peninsula Health, Bass Coast Health, Gippsland Southern Health, and Kooweerup Regional Health Services, effective from 1 January 2026. The Department: Alfred Pathology Service (APS) provides a comprehensive range of pathology testing, consultation services, and collection services to clinicians and patients of Alfred Health. The Microbiology unit provides diagnostic services for a range of infectious diseases. Due to the nature of the associated hospitals’ activities, there is emphasis on the support of trauma and emergency services, the support of organ transplantation - especially heart and lung, the support of HIV-related diagnostic services, and support of bone marrow transplantation services. The Role The Scientist in this position will be responsible for the set-up of the Microbiology laboratory and verification of associated instruments at the Western Health sites (New Footscray Hospital and Sunshine Hospital laboratories). Following training, and under the supervision of the Principal Scientist in Microbiology at Prahran, the incumbent will perform verification studies on instruments in both the Bacteriology and Serology/Molecular Biology areas, provide staff training, carry out day-to-day equipment maintenance, and manage quality control and quality assurance programs, as required. The position will require the incumbent to work on premises under construction which will require wearing of appropriate personal protective equipment whilst on these premises. These include but are not limited to, safety helmet, steel-toe covered footwear, safety glasses, and high-visibility vests. As such, the position will require a White Card qualification, the cost of which will be covered by the SPS. Skills/Qualifications BSc or BAppSc with a major in Microbiology - note: evidence of assessment by the Australian Institute of Medical and Clinical Scientists is required for overseas qualifications. Minimum of 5 years in clinical microbiology with a broad working knowledge in all microbiology disciplines. Good attention to detail. Sound verbal and written communication skills. Ability to function well in a team environment. Ability to organise own work to ensure time frames are met. Class C driver's license and willingness to travel to the various WH and Prahran sites, as needed.
