About the branch The Legal Metrology Branch (LMB) plays an important role in ensuring Australian consumers and industry can rely on trusted measurements for fair trade in goods and services. To ensure traders comply with the law and adopt correct measurement trading practices, we employ inspectors who check that measuring instruments (for example, weighing scales, fuel pumps and weighbridges) are accurate throughout Australia, pre-packaged articles contain the correct amount of produce, and that fuel sold in service stations complies with fuel quality standards. We also support the outcomes of other government agencies, undertaking inspection and audit activities through memoranda of understanding. About the section The Training & Technology Transfer (TTT) section provides measurement training in biological, chemical, physical and legal metrology. The team delivers high quality training to staff, industry and the Australian community with the aim of improving measurement skills. The section operates as NMI’s Registered Training Organisation (RTO) No. 91419 delivering the PSP40522 Certificate IV in Trade Measurement to its assistant trade measurement officers (ATMOs). Nationally accredited assessment is provided for: verifiers of measuring instruments used for trade public weighbridge operators who work for NMI-licensed organisations, as a critical part of Australia’s measurement system. Our ideal candidate The Senior Training Officer (STO) will: have a highly developed, specialist technical knowledge of legal metrology and the requirements of measurement legislation, as well as experience operating in an RTO. be able to work with a high degree of autonomy in solving complex problems and issues. be able to exercise sound decision-making and judgement to produce high level advice and support, including high-quality training materials and supporting documents. be accountable under broad direction to undertake complex work and deliver quality outcomes across the legal metrology training functions of NMI. have demonstrated experience mentoring staff, and with delivery of training and conducting assessment, as well as trade measurement legislation, policy and practice. The STO actively manages key internal stakeholder relationships, including with ATMOs, their coaches and branch management. They will also research and evaluate potential external training suppliers, negotiating and coordinating training package delivery. What you will do The duties of the role include: Demonstrate leadership capability by mentoring new ATMOs and their coaches as they are on-boarded and progress through their training and assessment program Develop and deliver training, as well as conducting observations and/or assessments, as required Research, evaluate and coordinate delivery of training courses appropriate to a range of internal stakeholder cohorts, in consultation with Branch leaders Mentor the Training Coordination Officer with regard to research, coordination and procedural matters required for internal training delivery Coordinate development of policies and procedures, training materials, assessment and evaluation tools, answer keys and other documentation related to delivery of training Contribute to the strategic direction of the section and broader LMB by identifying opportunities for internal collaboration and process improvement Lead by example, displaying integrity by upholding NMI’s values and supporting others to do the same. Eligibility Applicants will be required to possess a current Australian driver’s licence and demonstrate their attainment of: Certificate IV in Trade Measurement (or greater) Certificate IV in Government Investigations Whilst not mandatory, desirable professional qualifications, experience, certifications, or licenses include the following: Experience in developing and implementing training programs. Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (or ability to obtain within 18 months of commencing in the role) Sound experience in mentoring and leadership To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, candidates must be Australian Citizens. Positions require a Baseline security clearance and successful candidates will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level. Notes The position is not tied to a specific NMI location, and there is a presumption that flexible working will be accommodated. Please reach out to the contact officer to discuss this further. The successful applicant may be required to undertake inter- and intra-state travel with overnight absences away from home for periods of up to a week at a time.
