About our team Regional Operations | Ac South | Aviation & Regional Operations Sth | Aviation Goods Melbourne South Division is responsible for the delivery of operations and support across Victoria and Tasmania. It oversees Australia's gateways, including international airports and seaports while facilitating legitimate trade and travel, and undertakes operations in the prevention, deterrence and detection of regulated goods into Australia. About the Section The Aviation Goods South area command (encompassing roles in International Mail, Air Cargo, Detained Goods, Firearms, and Cargo Clearance) is responsible for facilitating legitimate trade through the border and enforcing customs and other legislation. Officers detect and provide a deterrence to the unlawful movement of prohibited, restricted or regulated goods and support revenue collection. Officers employed in the Firearms domain are responsible for providing effective controls over the importation and exportation of firearms in accordance with Government firearms and safety legislation and supporting policies. Officers employed in the Firearms domain also provide advice to operational areas on the identification and classification of firearms as well as parts and accessories. Our ideal candidate The APS6 ABF Supervisor (ABFS) (Firearms) works under limited direction to lead and manage activities and teams. They oversee the firearms examination capability for Victoria and provide expertise and advice when required nationally and liaises with external agencies and stakeholders regarding sensitive and complex firearms related matters. All officers working within the Firearms team are required to undertake, and pass, a psychometric assessment as their work involves the handling and management of firearms, ammunition, weapons and other potentially harmful items. Duties and responsibilities The APS6 ABFS (Firearms) oversees and coordinates the workflow and outcomes of their team and provides technical expertise and advice as required. They are required to perform activities including, but not limited to: Conduct and supervise firearms safety testing in line with procedures and regulatory requirements Provide recommendations to detain or release firearms based on complex risk assessment, analysis of provided information and safety testing outcomes Manage liaison with importers and industry Lead firearms examination capability, including the development of operational documentation and examination records Direct or action the release, seizure or detention of firearms, including permit verification and escalation management Supervise officers handling firearms and firearm parts to ensure compliance with work health and safety (WHS) requirements Investigate and respond to complaints, including liaison with officers, industry and stakeholders Manage and coordinate the Armoury Asset audit Schedule Contribute to the development and maintenance of procedural instructions and other governance frameworks related to ABF Firearms related Legislation, Regulation, Policy and SOPs Where required, assist with the delivery of: Authorised Arms Issuing Officer (AAIO) training to the region Custodial Firearms Safe Handling (CFSH) training to the region Firearms Identification and Testing Officer (FITO) training to the region Other duties as required. Home Affairs Workers will also be required to obtain and maintain an Onboarding Check. In certain circumstances, an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC) may be required in addition to, or in lieu of, an Onboarding Check, which will be determined by the delegate as necessary.
