The key duties of the position include The Role The acquisition of conventionally-armed, nuclear-powered submarines is an historic and transformative endeavour for Australia. The whole-of-nation effort to safely and securely deliver the cutting edge nuclear-powered submarine program will transform Australia's economic and national security landscape for decades to come. This role will oversee the technical program for non-nuclear power generation and storage systems, energy management, submarine auxiliary systems, and atmosphere control technology. The successful candidate will provide technical leadership and management in developing and maintaining capability within Australia to analyse, assess, and manage the electrical power, auxiliary and atmosphere control systems used in submarines. They will also support submarine maintenance and manufacture, by generating relevant objective quality evidence to inform decision making regarding these systems. This will require initiation and management of collaborative partnerships, and liaisons with Australian and international stakeholders. Your role will be to define and develop ASA's non-nuclear power, energy and atmospheres technology related technical capability for conventionally armed, nuclear powered submarines. Additionally, you will be required to lead and enable ongoing programs in these fields within the Australian submarine enterprise. The duties of this role include, but are not limited to: Develop and execute a plan for growing workforce and technical capability in the fields of non-Nuclear power generation and storage systems, energy management and atmosphere control technology for Australian submarines. Oversee the development of technical capability within Australia to analyse, assess and manage non-nuclear power generation and storage systems, energy management and atmosphere control technology. Generate and provide relevant objective quality evidence to inform decision making and support design, maintenance, sustainment and construction of Australian submarines. Liaise with US and UK counterparts to develop Australian capability in preparation for the submarine rotational force and the acquisition of SSNs. Plan and manage a range of human and physical resources required to carry out complex programs in the areas of non-nuclear power generation and storage systems, energy management and atmosphere control technology. Initiate, develop and maintain collaborative programs with Defence, Australian universities, industry, and international partners. Your role may range from being very specialist in nature to quite broad. You may also have the opportunity to work across streams. To excel in the role, you may be required to: Research and synthesise complex information. Develop, investigate, test and interpret technical requirements. Provide technical advice, knowledge and recommendations. Develop and lead teams of engineers in the relevant fields. Engage with Defence, AUKUS and industry partners to understand and develop requirements. Prepare briefs, minutes, proposals and presentations. Coordinate, share and effectively engage with highly skilled teams across the enterprise. About our Team The Technical Division of ASA is responsible for providing design control, independent technical advice, assurance and authority that will support the development and future operation of the nuclear-powered submarine fleet. With an increased forward presence of Royal Navy and US Navy Nuclear-Powered Submarines to Australia, this may mean working closely on site, and/or travel or relocation overseas. The Technical Fellow - Submarine Electrical Systems will have extensive knowledge and experience relating to submarine power generation (non-nuclear) and storage, as well as submarine electrical systems. They will provide a strategic level of specialist, professional and technical expertise relating to their area, and support submarine safety by enabling experimental research and the development of computational models. They will initiate, establish and maintain interpersonal relationships with a network of stakeholders internally and externally, and have the ability to recognise shared agendas and work toward mutually beneficial outcomes. We are seeking talented people who can work collaboratively and have a passion for applying their technical skills and knowledge to manage and support the development and implementation of capability for submarine systems. Our ideal candidate will bring the following attributes and skills to the role: Bachelor degree related to engineering and/or science. Experience in workforce planning, and building of a team to deliver technical outcomes and meet deadlines. Demonstrated professional experience working in the fields of submarine power generation and storage (non-nuclear), electrical and other auxiliary systems. Demonstrated professional experience in both experimental research and development of analytical modelling capabilities. Experience related to technology development. Demonstrated professional experience in the management of resources, including staff supervision, team leadership, budgeting, and infrastructure, in the delivery of complex technical projects. Demonstrated experience in international engagements to develop capability and provide solutions, especially within the Defence area and Government-to-Government agreements. Proven ability in supervision and mentorship of staff, including career guidance.
