The Opportunity APS6 Policy Officer The Policy Officer supports the Assistant Manager to research and develop policies and provide specialist advice that supports the safe and secure management of Australia’s radioactive waste. The Policy Officer will work across the branch, division, the department and with a range of external stakeholders to draft cabinet submissions, proposals, and associated documents for consideration by Government. This includes formulating evidence-based policy advice, working with technical and social science experts, and applying international best-practice policy approaches for managing radioactive waste in an Australian context. The Policy Officer must be able to manage complex workloads and diverse stakeholders with reasonable autonomy and accountability. The Assistant Manager is responsible for operational policy matters associated with the safe and secure management of Australia’s radioactive waste and achievement of ARWA’s strategic objectives, and is responsible for leading policy development within a team that supports projects and programs that contribute to the operational outcomes for the Agency. The incumbent provides leadership within a team that operates across the branch, division, and the department with a range of external stakeholders. The Assistant Manager will be responsible for managing their operational workload under broad direction of the Manager. What you will do Develop and review written documentation, with attention to accuracy and detail. Manage complex projects and/or tasks including a demonstrated ability to think creatively and with an outcomes-mindset. Research and analyze policy, program, legislative, and data issues to assist with preparing policy and/or program advice for senior executives, a Board, Committee, and the Minister. Interpersonal skills including the ability to develop and maintain productive working relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders including First Nations Peoples. Provide material support towards highly complex and sensitive radioactive waste management projects and work programs with strategic, political, and/or operational significance. Provide support across ARWA on strategic direction considering the broader political, organizational, and demographic landscape that may impact project and program outcomes. What we are looking for Experience in policy development and ability to support the provision of strategic advice, and the translation and application of policy in a sensitive, time-pressured, and complex government environment. Well-developed written and verbal communication skills, for example, demonstrated ability to draft sound advice and prepare written reports and briefings. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and build effective relationships with team members and stakeholders. Sound analytical and problem-solving skills. Demonstrated experience in strategic policy development and high-level ability to support the provision of strategic advice, and the translation and application of policy in a sensitive, time-pressured, and complex government environment. Experience supporting and managing junior staff. To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, applicants must: Be an Australian citizen or going to be granted Australian Citizenship before commencement. You may be asked to provide evidence of this. Undertake a pre-employment security assessment and subsequent security clearance. This position requires a Baseline security clearance.
