We’re looking for a Chief Engineer & Safety Lead to join our pre-opening team—someone who’s as passionate about sustainability, innovation, and safety as they are about leading a high-performing team and maintaining a safe, well-maintained hotel environment. About the Role An exciting opportunity exists for a Chief Engineer & Safety Lead to open the first Caption by Hyatt in Australia. You will be responsible for overseeing the successful opening of the hotel and, once open, ensuring the smooth and efficient maintenance operations of the hotel on a day-to-day basis. You will work closely with your team, ensuring safety, sustainability, and compliance while upholding Hyatt’s high standards. Some Key Responsibilities Pre-Opening & Defects Liability Period (DLP) Management Oversee technical handovers and snag lists with project and design teams. Manage the DLP period to optimize long-term efficiency and reduce future issues. Set up preventive maintenance programs and asset management systems in collaboration with Hyatt’s Opening & Transitions team. Maintenance & Asset Management Develop a comprehensive preventive maintenance plan for all hotel rooms, plant, and equipment. Ensure compliance with local regulations, Hyatt’s technical standards, and brand expectations. Supervise daily maintenance tasks, repairs, and servicing to ensure timely completion. Implement energy conservation procedures, tracking sustainability metrics and reporting non-compliance. Oversee life safety equipment and emergency procedures. Continuously seek ways to enhance efficiency and leverage technology to streamline operations and reduce environmental impact. Safety & Compliance Act as the hotel’s Safety Lead, ensuring WHS compliance, risk management, and emergency procedures. Chair the WHS Committee, working with HR, the GM, and contractors to maintain a safe workplace. Lead Hyatt’s sustainability initiatives, ensuring energy, water, and waste reduction aligns with Hyatt’s Green Key or EarthCheck goals. Build and mentor a high-performing Engineering team that is engaged, empowered, and set up for success. Actively lead, coach, and develop team members for both immediate performance and future career growth. Qualifications We are looking for a hands-on and adaptable leader who is passionate about engineering excellence, safety, and sustainability. To thrive in this role, you will bring: A trade or engineering qualification with relevant certifications. Previous experience in a similar role within the hotel industry (pre-opening experience is highly desirable). Exceptional knowledge of plant maintenance, building services, WH&S, and emergency procedures. A proactive, hands-on approach, willing to work alongside your team in problem-solving. Strong leadership and interpersonal skills to train, guide, and develop your team. The ability to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and ensure compliance. A problem-solving mindset, anticipating and resolving operational challenges with innovation. Strong communication and relationship-building skills with colleagues, guests, and stakeholders.
