This dual role splits 60% towards managing daily legal matters and agreements and 40% focusing on developing and operationalising Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI) and Victorian Clinical Genetics Services’ (VCGS) compliance program, culture, and insurance management. Reporting to the Head of Legal, you’ll collaborate with various stakeholders both internally and externally to ensure that compliance resources are clear, accessible, and effective. About your new team: The MCRI/VCGS Legal Office plays a pivotal role in supporting over 1500+ researchers and clinicians with a wide range of legal, compliance, and insurance matters. We manage around 1500+ agreements annually and oversee the compliance framework across MCRI/VCGS, ensuring smooth legal processes while promoting good governance and risk management practices. Your responsibilities include: Compliance & Insurance Management: Develop and maintain a compliance framework, policies, and procedures. Support researchers in identifying and mitigating compliance risks across the organization. Conduct audits to assess compliance effectiveness and recommend improvements. Manage MCRI/VCGS's insurance program, including policy procurement, claims management, and training. Oversee the performance and development of the Compliance and Insurance Analysts. Legal Role: Review and negotiate legal agreements (e.g., CDAs, MTAs, collaboration and clinical trial agreements). Provide timely legal advice across the organization, from senior management to researchers. Facilitate the strategic goals of MCRI and VCGS while managing legal risks. Assist with IP capture, industry collaboration agreements, and manage external legal relationships. Lead legal education initiatives and ensure strong collaboration with the RCH legal team. Selection Criteria: Qualified lawyer (8+ PQE) with significant commercial law experience. Proven ability in developing and delivering compliance and insurance programs. Strong negotiation and communication skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities effectively. Collaborative mindset with the ability to build relationships at all levels. Experience mentoring junior team members and working independently. Beneficial: Previous experience in-house or with compliance strategy development. Familiarity with the healthcare, research, or university sector. Scientific qualifications are highly regarded.
