eSafety - EOI - Asst Manager - Social Media Age Restrictions, EL1 Join to apply for the eSafety - EOI - Asst Manager - Social Media Age Restrictions, EL1 role at eSafety Commissioner EXPRESSION OF INTEREST Assistant Manager – Social Media Age Restrictions Team (SMART)Executive Level 1(2 positions available) What You'll Do The Assistant Managers of the Social Media Age Restrictions Team at the eSafety Commissioner (eSafety) will be responsible for supporting the development and implementation of eSafety’s regulatory approach to the new, world-first social media minimum age requirement under the Online Safety Amendment (Social Media Minimum Age) Act 2024 (Act). The Successful Candidate Will Support the development of eSafety’s regulatory strategy and approach to the new scheme, working to promote human rights and regulatory cooperation and coherence. Draft evidence-based guidelines for reasonable steps relevant platforms must take to prevent age-restricted users having accounts, including by conducting consultation with a broad array of stakeholders. Design and implement the internal and external systems, processes and resources needed to operationalise the scheme. Collaborate with other teams across eSafety to help shape public messaging and awareness raising efforts. Contribute to briefings, speeches, policy papers and discussions about the new scheme, and represent eSafety at various domestic and international meetings, events and fora. These are 12 month opportunities, with potential for longer term extension or permanent at-level transfers. Once the requirements take effect (by the end of 2025), the nature of the work will shift from regulatory policy design and operationalisation to compliance and enforcement activities, working closely with legal, industry supervision and other teams. Skills And Capability We Need We are looking for candidates who: Display leadership skills, and an ability to develop and enhance the skills of junior officers. Demonstrate an ability to manage competing priorities and adapt to changes in the operating environment. Have experience with or awareness of the regulation of digital services, particularly the Online Safety Act 2021 (Cth) and related legislative frameworks across Australia and the globe. Understand digital services and the trust and safety interventions available to promote children’s online safety, particularly age assurance mechanisms and complementary measures. Are familiar with human rights principles and frameworks – particularly those relating to children’s rights – and are committed to children’s participation in regulatory policy-making. Have excellent verbal and written communication skills, with proven experience in stakeholder consultation and engagement. Demonstrate strong strategic and analytical skills, and an ability to think outside the box. Excel in a highly dynamic and fast-paced environment and are comfortable working on projects which attract a high degree of public attention and scrutiny. Embody the APS Values. About Our Team The Social Media Age Restrictions Team will be situated within eSafety’s Industry Compliance and Enforcement Branch, which leads eSafety’s regulatory work to improve online safety on a systemic and proactive basis. Additional Information Please be aware that this role does not involve direct exposure to harmful online material (such as child sexual exploitation material), but it does require in-depth and frequent discussion of online harms, which may include child sexual exploitation and abuse and terrorism and violent extremism. This opportunity is open to all applicants, and will be offered to a successful candidate for an initial period of 12 months. A permanent S26 transfer at level may be considered for an ongoing APS employee, noting that the nature of the role will shift after the first year from the regulatory policy design stage to compliance and enforcement, requiring additional skillsets.
